Algonquin Township Assessments Delayed Until Halloween

Halloween will be especially scary for Algonquin Township residents this year.  The Township's 2012 property assessments which were supposed to have gone out Friday won't be published and mailed until Wednesday, instead.  That means the appeals period will run from Oct. 31 to Nov. 30 for Algonquin Township taxpayers.

The problem, according to a Mchenry County Assessor's spokesman, was a mail contractor's delay in preparing to send out the latest assessments.  State law only requires publishing assessments that increased this year in Crystal Lake's Northwest Herald.  However,  McHenry County rules require a mailed notice to every taxpayer every year,  whether an assessment went up, down or just sideways.

McHenry County's guide to appealing assessments is here: http://www.co.mchenry.il.us/departments/assessments/PDFDocs/How%20to%20File%20an%20Appeal.pdf

The forms required can be downloaded here:

There's still no date set for publishing and mailing Grafton Township assessments.  The rough estimate there is "about two weeks."
