The fifth annual "It's Our River Day" at Algonquin's Cornish Park Saturday drew a good cleanup crew of volunteers but didn't produce as such a big pile of detritus as usual. It might have had something to do with the lack of rain this Summer. Praising Trustee Gerry Glogowski's regular litter cleanups, Algonquin President John Schmitt observed, "It all washes down to the river."
Algonquin resident Mark Block prowling the river bank snagged a three-foot chunk of 1x4 that otherwise might have drifted to his home downriver. In fact, he said, that was what he planned to do, having brought an inflatable raft upstream with him.
Retired Dundee-Crown environmental sciences teacher Gary Zwick said, "You can never step in the same river twice and so it's great to see some of the same people and so many new people, too."
