Firefighters Race Clock For Algonquin 9/11 Memorial
Paving contractors and volunteers raced the clock Tuesday to complete a new 9/11 memorial in Algonquin's Riverfront Park scheduled for dedication at 6 pm next Tuesday. Off-duty firemen were busy slicing do-it-yourself veneer with a diamond saw from bricks out of the old Algonquin village fire station at Edwards St. The hard part will be erecting a 5,000 pound girder from the World Trade Center on the site. That's expected Friday. "We're going to make it," vowed ALFPD Lt. Matt Berg buttering mortar onto another piece of facing for the memorial's plinth.
