Firefighters Dedicate 9/11 Memorial In Algonquin
"Visit it often and remember," Algonquin Village President advised the crowd.
The memorial also honors two local firefighters who died in the line of duty. April 5, 1967, Firefighter Edwin LeRoy “Roy” Benson died while advancing a hose line at a residential fire. May 23, 1976, Captain G.D. “Mac” McIntyre died while returning to quarters after an emergency incident. Both were “volunteers” with the department and responded from home or work when a call was dispatched, Benson from his service station, McIntire from his railroad job.
The new memorial in Riverside Park was paid for by donations and fundraising efforts. Some funds are still needed for the continued upkeep of the Firefighters Memorial. Checks can be mailed to: Algonquin Firefighters Association, 1020 W. Algonquin Rd. Lake in the Hills IL, 60156. Questions can be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org.
