Work Begins On Algonquin 9/11 Memorial
Algonquin Lake in the Hills Firefighters weren't kidding Tuesday evening after the Algonquin Village Board approved a memorial to 9/11 victims and fallen ALFPD firefighters. They said they'd start work on it Wednesday and so they did at 7 am. By Wednesday afternoon they'd dug a 10-foot hole at the site on the north end of Riverside Park, poured a base for a two-plus-ton girder from the World Trade Center and passed two Village inspections. Still to come is backfilling, brick paving for a surrounding plaza and erecting the giant memento of the 9/11 attacks. Time is short since a dedication ceremony is planned for Sept. 11.

Not to sound like a jerk, but what does Algonquin/LITH have to do w/NYC and 9-11. I mean, c'mon guys. Yes, have a memorial for fallen local firefighters but don't piggy-back on something you had nothing to do with.
Good Evening Anonymous,
This project is geared as a memorial to two Algonquin Firefighters that passed away in the line of duty while serving the fine residents of Algonquin. Along with a very appropriate memorial to those two gentlemen and the sacrifices they made to their community, there was also be a memorial to the events of September 11th, including women and men of our great military that are protecting our freedoms every day. This project is funded 100% from the donations received by the Firefighters' Association and sales of memorial brick that will be installed into the site. If you are interested in any more info, please feel free to contact me at alglithffmemorial@gmail.com.

A worthy tribute to two fallen firefighters. As anonymous above stated, there really is no connection between 9-11 and Algonquin. Did any of our firefighters or equipment respond to NYC? If so, maybe there is a connection. Just wondering.
I believe Matt already explained it above. It will serve as a memorial for the two heroic Firefighters that lost their lives and as a memorial to the 9/11 events. I don't think the 9/11 part of it ties into Algonquin specifically, it is just a worthy memorial to 9/11
