Slim Hope For Grafton Special Meeting Tonight On Mediation
The meeting, which required 48-hour notice, is scheduled for 7 pm this evening at the Grafton Offices on Vine Street in Huntley.
Trustee Barb Murphy said she wouldn't be able to attend because of a prior commitment. "Two days notice?" she said. "C'mon."
"(Moore) brought to agenda to my house about 6:30 (pm Tuesday)," said Trustee Betty Zirk. She indicated she would attend the meeting but not accept an offer floated two weeks ago by Woodstock attorney Robert Hanlon to mediate Moore's long-standing lawsuit against the rest of the Board for usurping her power and theirs, vice-versa. "Our attorneys can't be there because they have other meetings," she said. "I'm certainly not going to make a decision without them," said Zirk. "They know more about it than I do."
"If Betty's going, I'll probably be there," said Trustee Gerry McMahon even though he was doubtful Hanlon, or anyone else, can achieve a resolution of the disputes.
Trustee Rob LaPorta said much the same thing. "If Betty's going to show up, I'll show up," he said. "I have high respect for her. I'll go to support her."
Perhaps more important, apparently the would-be mediator will attend. "(Hanlon) called me (Wednesday) and said no one had told him about the meeting but he'd adjusted his schedule so that he could be there," said Zirk.
Two weeks ago Hanlon, unprompted, offered to mediate the original Grafton case. However, this evening's agenda says the meeting is not only about that one but also Assessor Bill Ottley's lawsuit against Moore for improperly paying his bills and Road Commissioner Jack Freund's somewhat similar suit, too. Hanlon didn't return a call to see if he intends to mediate three different disputes simultaneously.
Moore earlier said she wanted to call a Special Meeting Tuesday for Hanlon's mediation offer but had to check first with Trustees. "She never told us about it," said Zirk. Moore didn't return FEN calls about a Special Meeting beginning Friday.
