MHB Begins Exec Search, Promises "Response"

The McHenry County Mental Health Board Thursday agreed agreed to have Executive Director Sandy Lewis answer some County Board members' criticism, voted to start looking for a search firm to replace her and picked a new interim Deputy Director because it'll probably take a long time.

Since Lewis and her two top administrators announced they were leaving two weeks ago, LITH County Board member Paula Yensen has been questioning $20,000 worth of payments to Lewis to get a Doctor's degree and Crystal Lake Member Donna Kurtz has been wondering about a lot of other things like a $400,000 to a LaSalle County agency for a deal to take over a McHenry County provider that fell through afterwards.  "I directed by responses to the (County Board) Health and Human Services Committee," said Lewis.  "Now we're getting more (questions)."

MHB Board members decided Lewis will answer them at the next meeting Sept. 13.  However, the Board members decided that, henceforth, public comments in MHB meetings will be limited to three minutes. "I am not going to allow it to be someone's soapbox," said President Lee Ellis.

The Board OK'ed requests for bids to pick a search firm to find Lewis' replacement, a process she estimated would probably take five months.  Ellis said it would be a national the search since a merely regional one would cost just as much.  He told FEN one area applicant had stepped forward but MHB's search committee decided his/her credentials weren't good enough.

While the search goes on, the Board decided to have MHB Project Director Todd Schroll assume Deputy Director duties with an an extra $150 added to his salary every two weeks.  Last week the plan was to skip an interim replacement for Bob Lesser retiring today, but Lewis said MHB needed to fill the spot after all because MHB protocols require someone responsible at that level.
