Local Alum Runs For Olympic Gold Sunday

Jacobs High School graduate Evan Jager, originally from Algonquin, came in second in this morning's Olympic qualifying men's 3,000-meter steeplechase to compete for a gold medal in Sunday's Olympic final.

Jager turned in an 8:16.61 time, about .4 seconds behind top qualifier Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad from France.  Jager ran near the front for the second half of his preliminary heat, even assuming the lead with two laps to go. He led for most of the bell lap, too.

The 2007 Jacobs alum who now runs in Portland, OR, said afterward that he wasn't supposed to lead, only stay among the top four, but he did, anyway, since he didn't feel like he was pushing himself.

Jager's run for the gold is scheduled for 3:25 pm Central Time Sunday.
