Settlement To Be Filed "Soon" In Sheriff's Office Beating Case

The attorney for an elderly couple who claim McHenry County Sheriff's deputies used excessive force against them said Monday an agreement to settle the case won't be filed in Federal Court for a while yet.  "I'm hoping two months," said Louis J. Meyer, who estimated it will take that long for him to negotiate final medical bills for the couple's treatment.  "It's my job to reduce (the bills) as much as I can," he said.

Jerome and Carla Pavlin charged in a lawsuit that deputies broke into their Nunda Township home looking for their son in 2008, beat the 81 year-old man, injured his 66 year-old wife, and then tried to cover it up.  Deputies said the pair attacked them. The pair asked for undisclosed compensatory and punitive damages.

FEN reported last week that a settlement had been reached. Meyer said Monday that under conditions of the agreement he wasn't allowed to discuss how much money is involved or any other terms.  He also said he expected a protective order to remain in place keeping disciplinary records secret for the seven deputies involved in the incident.

This cost MEGA BUCKS people. Do not fool yourself. That is why the sheriff wants it sealed. He hired and keeps deputies that should not be working there and this is what happens. WE PAY. Citizens have a right to know what goes on and how much it costs us. This being sealed is an insult to taxpayers.

That department needs to be cleaned out and ANDY ZINKE IS NOT THE ANSWER. Needs new leadership.
This tells you that these officers were in the WRONG and no surprise to many. The Pavlins had the money to sue. How many victims that did not have money to sue and the abuse continues.
WE are paying for the lawyers on both sides.
