LITH Park And Ride Nearing Construction

The McHenry County Board's Transportation Committee Wednesday sent a construction supervision contract along for formal approval next month to build a Park and Ride facility at Route 31 and Virginia Road in Lake in the Hills.

The 140-space lot's been in the planning process for five years now as engineers have wrestled to balance the demands of two other projects that also converge around the 31/Virginia Intersection. Just to the south, Algonquin's Route 31 Western Bypass will debouch when it's completed in two years.  Meanwhile, IDOT planners have long wanted to add space between Route 31's Klasen Road and Virginia Road intersections for safety reasons.

The Virginia relocation's underway now to move Virginia north so it T's into 31.  That will open up enough space for the Park and Ride lot to tuck in between the Meyer gravel pit and the new intersection. The County Board approved the Park and Ride project last month as long as it's paid for with State and federal money.

In the pic:  Transportation planners are trying to kill three birds with one stone with current work around the Route 31/Virgnia Road intersection.

Ed-Please expand on this Park and Ride concept. I'm familiar with this near trains, Els and bus lines but I am confused as to why there would be a Park and Ride on 31 & Virginia Road.

As I understand it, the hope is that it will be a convergence point for carpoolers.--ed.

Ed-Sounds like a waste of $$. Not aware of too many carpoolers out here that facilitates the need for a 140 space parking lot!

Maybe if there was going to be a shuttle to the train station in Crystal Lake or some such this would make sense. I agree though, I don't see the usefulness of this.
