Here's a copy of "The Dunlap Broadside", one of between 100 and 200 handbills printed the evening of July 4, 1776, to announce the nation's declaration of independence and the reasons for doing so. Benjamin Towne's Pennsylvania Evening Post was the first newspaper to reprint the Declaration July 6. If you date from Lexington and Concord, the Revolutionary War was already well over a year-old.
