Historical Society Barn Preservation Programs Spotlighted

The McHenry County Historical Society's registered 99 barns in McHenry County so far in an attempt to record part of the rural visual landscape fast disappearing through neglect, abandonment, demolition or fire.

In 1999 the Society started a program to record the remaining barns of county. By collecting information on the structures, their builders, locations, dimensions and usage the Society plans to maintain records and photographs in one central location. The barn registration program does not restrict owners in the use of their property in any way and just seeks to record the existence of the barns while they do, in fact, exist.

Another barn awareness program is the Societies quilted barn project, the application of painted quilt designs to the sides of barns. About 50  barn quilts have been undertaken in McHenry County and a self-guided driving tour guide's available from the Society.

Individuals interested in learning more about either or both of the barn programs can contact the McHenry County Historical Society either by phone at 815-923-2267 or at the Society website:  www.mchsonline.org.
