McHenry County College announed Friday its Interim Treasurer and Administrative Services VP was stepping down after only five months in the position.
Frank Zeller said family-related issues, not to mention a two-hour commute to and from his home near LaSalle, forced him to quit effective Jan. 22. The college hired Zeller on an indefinite-duration temporary basis after Treasurer Ron Ally left this past summer to become the Elgin school district's CFO.
Zeller's resignation will leave only one of the three top slots in MCC's administration permanently filled. The college hired Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs Tony Miksa last August after Interim VP and Woodstock Mayor Brian Sager retired. MCC's Interim President is Kathleen Plinske chosen to fill in when President Walt Packard resigned early last year.

District 300 Revises Plans For Early Closures
The next time District 300 sends the kids home from school early they'll try to tell their parents about it, officials said Friday. They didn't when the buses ran 15 minutes early in Thursday's snow.
"We did hear from some parents," said Allison Strupek, Supervisor of Communications Services. "Dr. (Superintendant Ken) Arndt apologized to them," she said.
Although neighboring District 158 called a snow day for its schools Thursday, District 300 didn't. As conditions deteriorated, however, the district opted for an early dismissal. Strupek said that even in hindsight, "There's no regret about holding school."
"Most of the schools in the Chicago area were open," she said.
If there's another day cut short, however, Strupek said parents would be notified of early closure via the district's Rapid Communication System. That's the voicemail phone program that calls in the morning if a school day's going to be canceled before it even starts

FEN Apologies For Tardiness
The First Electric Newspaper jury-rigged computer didn't actually collapse but after fighting it for 16 hours the editor finally did.
The computer seems to be stable at the moment except that it's booting from the wrong hard drive now. Somehow that doesn't seem as troubling as it would have yesterday.

Candidates Reveal Interests, So Does Ethics Group
District 3 County Board candidate Craig Steagall announced Thursday that he'd filled out the conflict of interest form proposed by the Alliance for Land, Agriculture and Water. ALAW has a draft ordinance before the County Board asking all candidates and officeholders to do so and earlier said District 2 candidate Donna Kurtz had also submitted the form.
Premised on the supposed public perception, especially in Illinois, that politicians are corrupt, ALAW has called for the board to force appointed and elected officials to disclose their real estate and financial interests. The measure is currently being vetted by the State's Attorney's office to see if some of its penalties are legal.
Kurtz sent out her copy of ALAW's form this morning listing all her local economic interests. The form says she doesn't have any. Even so, said Kurtz, “It is time for all elected and appointed
officials in Illinois to show that they will never use their position of public trust to benefit themselves.”
Steagall, a Crystal Lake businessman said, "I have completed ALAW’s disclosure questionnaire, and I challenge all candidates and elected officials in McHenry County to do the same." That gauntlet would be directed at the other 50 candidates running for county office in the Feb. 2 primary who haven't filed the form. ALAW has warned it will withhold its endorsement from any candidate won't complete it.
Meanwhile this week ALAW revealed the names of the group's current board of directors. Spokeswoman Emily Berendt had promised to do so following an FEN story about the ordinance a month ago. According to the group's site they are Patricia Kennedy, Emily Berendt, Kim Willis, Joseph Daleiden, Richard Brook, and John Kunzie.

Auger Advances Kane County Candidacy At Fundraiser
Thursday's snow didn't blanket the turnout at a fundraiser for Kane County Board candidate Maggie Auger. A lot of the guy supporters kept an eye on the widescreen Rose Bowl championship game playing in the rear, however.Auger, Chairman of the Algonquin Planning and Zoning Commission, wants the Republican nomination for Kane County's District 23 Board Seat and thinks her planning experience will come in handy there. "Kane County's going to grow again even though we're in a slowdown right now," she said.
Auger's opponent is Carpentersville's Donald Moore who pitches his financial expertise, something else Kane County could use a helping of.
District 23 includes the southern part of Algonquin, and parts of Carpentersville, West Dundee, Sleepy Hollow and Dundee Township.
In the pic: Dundee Township Supervisor Sue Harney introduced Kane County Board candidate Maggie Auger at a fundraiser at Algonquin's Barley House Thursday.

Snow Here and More Coming: School Closings
With a couple of inches already fallen and another four to six predicted all District 158 schools called a snow day Thursday. The Huntley area Public Library was also marked closed. In District 300, however, only the Cambridge Lakes Charter School called a snow day. Buses were running for all the rest of the schools.
Same snow, different opinions on its significance.
County Board Authorizes Housing Commission
The McHenry County Board Tuesday created a new Housing Commission to deal with the perceived lack of "affordable housing" in McHenry County. The Commission will have no enforcement powers, however.
"Oh, goody. Another layer of bureaucracy," said one planner off the record.
"Let me get this straight. This isn't our problem. It belongs to the municipalities but we're going to 'coordinate' it," said another observer.
The federal Department of Housing and Urban Development has promised to fund the Commission for two years , according to Board Chairman Ken Koehler.
That's the point, he said. "I think the municipalities are going to be happy about this one day," he said. "The federal agencies are going to be coming down on this in the near future," he said.

First Electric Newspaper Recovering
Bloody but unbowed, the First Electric Newspaper returned to providing free local news coverage for Algonquin, Lake in the Hills and Huntley Thursday with a computer assembled from a mismatched melange of castoffs and rubbish sporting a $10 operating system.
"The hard drive sounds like a rock crusher but this Frankenstein computer seems stable now and will become the backup when FEN's four month-old main computer is repaired," said Publisher Pete Gonigam. "I get another blue-screen-of-death and I'll just laugh (slightly madly) and swap a few connections."
In the meantime, Gonigam said he'd like to thank readers for their patience and forebearance. "If FEN had a mission statement I'd alter it slightly in view of this latest fiasco," said Gonigam. "FEN is an online free local weekly newspaper with new stories daily. Usually," he said.
"May I get back to doing news now?" he asked wearily.

GOP Governor's Candidate Woos County Voters
Hinsdale Republican gubernatorial candidate Kirk Dillard Monday reminded a McHenry County meeting of FOP (Friends of Pam [Althoff, State Senator]an ad hoc assemblage) in Crystal Lake that he was chief of staff the last time the state ran a balanced budget.Dillard implied McHenry County would have some extra input in a Dillard administration since he, Althoff and State Rep. Mike Tryon used to have some pretty good times during joint morning constitutionals back in the day.
Dillard rep Sean Murphy said the candidate's polls put him about even with ex-Attorney General Jim Ryan in the race for the GOP nomination.

Algonquin Board Accepts, Postpones Recreation Plan
The Algonquin Board of Trustees Monday accepted a report on the village's recreation and events needs and largely put it on a shelf until there's any money available to do anything with it. The village budget's shaping up to be tight for 2010-11 and President John Schmitt said, "when we have some money to spend on it we will. There's no time limit on this."
Monday's meeting was packed with Algonquin cops there to witness the swearing in of John Bucci as a sergeant. They'd have been there for Bucci all by himself but wife Amy is an Algonquin cop, too.

Huntley Library Mobile Addition Delayed
Big trucks and crews of workers were scheduled to begin installing Huntley Area Library District's new "mobile" addition Monday but that didn't happen. Communications Coordinator Leigh Ann Porsch said delivery had to be postponed thanks to "manufacturing delays".
Porsch said the Library still hasn't been informed of a new delivery date.
The near-3000 foot addition will house, mostly, the library's children's area. Speaking of which, the library's semi-annual Great Puzzle Exchange/Sale is up and running through the end of the month. Puzzles may be dropped off now at the Children's Room desk and starting next Monday the old old puzzles can be swapped for new old ones! The only rule is no missing pieces, please. Leftover puzzles will be sold beginning Jan. 24.

More Computer Problems At FEN
Fourteen hours of frustration followed a spontaneous computer shutdown and an incomprehensible warning on restart Sunday morning at the First Electric Newspaper. Emails and files were lost and FEN is currently publishing from a computer literally pulled from the garbage.

Year End Reports Show H1N1 Ebbing
The latest numbers from the Illinois Department of Public Health and the U.S. Centers For Disease Control show H1N1 flu cases continuing to fall but DCD warns "flu is unpredictable and activity can rise and fall throughout the season" and the season has several months yet to run.
The IDPH report for the week ended Dec. 31 found 77 new hospitalizations for H1N1 in illinois and four new deaths. The cumulative death total for the state now stands at 83, almost half in Cook County. Three deaths have been attributed to the virus in McHenry County.
IDPH figures show that, as experts predicted, H1N1 cases have hit the young disproportionately. Cases of seasonal flu skew to late middle age and older.
IDPH has an H1N1 shot locator here:

CDC has an H1N1 and seasonal flu shot locator here:
