Accidental homeowner Lake in the Hills is doing some marketing so in hopes of unloading its adventitious holding at auction next month. Wednesday was an impromptu media day at 11 Sugar Creek Court.A young couple abandoned the 2-story 3,250 foot home at some point in 2008 but nobody noticed until well into last year. By that time the pipes had frozen and thawed, soaked everything and started a crop of mold inside that that would put that cup of sweet potatoes in the refrigerator left over from Thanksgiving to shame. The bank holding the mortgage on the house foreclosed but wouldn't even bid on it themselves when they found out what was inside. Neither did anyone else. Village trustees found themselves left with a choice of bulldozing the home flat or cleaning it up and selling it. They chose the latter. A mold remediation company ripped out all the fixtures and nasty drywall during the Winter.
The home, built 10 years ago (with a lovely openland view out the rear, by the way), goes on auction Feb. 22 at 10 am at Village Hall. There'll be public inspections Wednesday, Feb. 17 and Saturday, 20, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. The village's Community Development department is trying to spread the word. Director Dan Olson said comparable homes in the area sold in the $280,000 range last year. Here are the details:

There's no dollar reserve set for the auction but the winning bid will still have to get past the trustees. Olson said the village has about $40,000 in direct costs for the home's cleanup.
