Appropriate to a holiday that features ghosts and monsters, Halloween trick-or-treating seems to be mutating.
Once upon a time, (last year or was it a lifetime ago) kids didn't begin to scurry door-to-door until the sun was going down. Now that's when the activity ends.
Lake in the Hills' Safe Trick Or Treat at its Safety Town facility was supposed to run from 3 to 6 pm. "We had to open an hour early," said Sgt. Terri Vollmer. By 4:30 officers were putting skeletons back in the closet at the village's Safety Center. "We ran out," she said.
Small herds of kids were grazing the neighborhoods of Algonquin at 4 pm but by 5 there were only a few stragglers evident in Lake in the Hills.
